As the start of school is approaching, I know it can feel like all the fun summer activities go out the window. And while schedules definitely get busier, remember that we still have a couple months of sweltering heat left in Iowa! There is time to check off those last remaining summer bucket list items. You’re likely going to be spending a lot of time in cars and hotel rooms before you know it, so I recommend enjoying the outdoors while you still can!
Here's a few fun Iowa activities that can still be done:
Lake Life: I know Iowa isn’t the land of lakes, but we still have plenty around the state. Most lakes offer paddle board or kayak rentals. Plus, the water is the best place to be when we’re fighting these high temperature and high humidity days.
Bike Trails: Biking is definitely a favorite Iowan pastime. Maybe you weren’t up for Ragbrai this year but try to find time to get out on a local trail. I know I have always wanted to bike the High Trestle Trail and check out the funky bridge all lit up at night. Check two things off the bucket list in one trip.
Wine Tasting: Iowa is surprisingly filled with a lot of wineries. Find one near you and see if they do any fun theme nights like outdoor music or woodfired pizza to pair with your wine.
Local Ice Cream Shops: It seems like nearly every small town has a local ice cream shop and everyone thinks their local shop is the best. Get out to some towns near you to put the best ice cream to the test. And this is something you could continue to do during travel season. Check out the local ice cream in your territory and you’ll have something truly important to talk with your recruits about. (Jersey Freeze in Monroe and Frosty Udder in Oskaloosa are my personal favorites!)
Farmer’s Markets: The Des Moines Farmer’s Market continues through October! There’s still plenty of time to experience this and support some great local businesses. A lot of small towns have their own Farmer’s Market as well. Be sure to stop by yours before the season is over.
Iowa State Fair: We all know our state has the best state fair and it’s happening now! Summer doesn’t feel complete without something deep fried in one and a bucket of cookies in the other. Maybe I’ll bump into you there!
I know it’s cliché, but summer really does fly by. I hope you can use some of these ideas to soak up the last weeks of summer activities!
