Ensuring College Credits Transfer and Apply

If its fall, most of us are busy with college fairs, school visits, campus visits, travel itineraries, applications, and endless emails. It’s hard to find a day when the entire staff is in the office at the same time.

Admission counselors get asked a wide variety of questions from potential students, parents, counselors, teachers, and advisors. With an increasing number of high school students participating in PSEO offerings and transfer students working on AA and AS programs, a common question admission counselors are asked is, “Will my credits transfer?”

A better follow up question should be “how will my credits apply?”

It is not just about planning how coursework will transfer; students need to think about course transfer and the implications of how course credits will count toward eventual degree requirements.

We would recommend that any student taking college level coursework (either in high school PSEO programs or a community college) utilize the resources provided at potential college websites prior to taking coursework. Resources can include:
• Articulation agreements and equivalency guides
• Transfer plans for specific majors
• Partnership programs
• Online equivalency programs

Students can also contact the respective college’s transfer admissions office to have a counselor assist with explaining program requirements. Counselors can also answer questions on how to get an official transcript evaluation and when to apply for admissions. Just because a student has transfer credits does not always make them a transfer student.

The course transfer process need not to be a guessing game and our college partners have resources to assist both high school and transfer students!
