At the 73rd NACAC Conference, the Iowa ACAC Assembly Delegates were part of a historical and defining vote.
On Saturday, September 16, the 2017 NACAC Assembly, was asked to consider approval of significant revisions completed by the Steering Committee on Admission Practices to the Statement and Principles of Good Practice (SPGP).
The SPGP is our code of ethics. It guides the work of admission professionals to maintain high standards of integrity and practice with the ultimate goal of better serving students. The last major revision of the SPGP was in 2007, when it was updated to reflect a new organizational structure that included Mandatory Statements, Best Practices, and Interpretations of Mandatory Statements. The original SPGP was adopted in Boston back in 1971, so it was very fitting to introduce a completely new SPGP in Boston 46 years later.Upon completion of voting, the assembly approved the new SPGP.
- The new organization of the document includes only mandatory statements, our core values, critical deadlines, practices, and a glossary of terms and our steps for monitoring and applying penalties.
- The Preamble intentionally states that we are proud to include NACAC’s commitment to providing college access and support for the underrepresented and underserved and committed to addressing inequities in the college admission process.
- Sections have been added regarding truthfulness and transparency, professional conduct, and respect for confidentiality, along with sections covering application plans, deadlines, waitlists, and more.
- The new document has added sections on the recruitment of transfer and international students, two cohorts that were noticeably absent in previous documents.
- A glossary of terms has been added to ensure our members have a common understanding of key terms.
- The Education, Monitoring and Penalties procedures have been added rather than being offered in a separate document. It is important that members understand there are consequences, if one is found to be out of compliance.
