Assembly Brief

At the 73rd NACAC Conference, the Iowa ACAC Assembly Delegates were part of a historical and defining vote.

On Saturday, September 16, the 2017 NACAC Assembly, was asked to consider approval of significant revisions completed by the Steering Committee on Admission Practices to the Statement and Principles of Good Practice (SPGP).

The SPGP is our code of ethics. It guides the work of admission professionals to maintain high standards of integrity and practice with the ultimate goal of better serving students. The last major revision of the SPGP was in 2007, when it was updated to reflect a new organizational structure that included Mandatory Statements, Best Practices, and Interpretations of Mandatory Statements. The original SPGP was adopted in Boston back in 1971, so it was very fitting to introduce a completely new SPGP in Boston 46 years later.Upon completion of voting, the assembly approved the new SPGP.

Here are the highlights of the new SPGP, according to NACAC and those on the steering committee:
  • The new organization of the document includes only mandatory statements, our core values, critical deadlines, practices, and a glossary of terms and our steps for monitoring and applying penalties.
  • The Preamble intentionally states that we are proud to include NACAC’s commitment to providing college access and support for the underrepresented and underserved and committed to addressing inequities in the college admission process.
  • Sections have been added regarding truthfulness and transparency, professional conduct, and respect for confidentiality, along with sections covering application plans, deadlines, waitlists, and more.
  • The new document has added sections on the recruitment of transfer and international students, two cohorts that were noticeably absent in previous documents.
  • A glossary of terms has been added to ensure our members have a common understanding of key terms.
  • The Education, Monitoring and Penalties procedures have been added rather than being offered in a separate document. It is important that members understand there are consequences, if one is found to be out of compliance.
We strongly encourage all Iowa ACAC members to take time to review the SBGP to understand the expectations and ethics by which our Admissions Association abides.
In addition to the SPGP vote, a new President-Elect and three new Board members were elected:
  • President-Elect:  Stephanie Niles - VP Enrollment, Marketing & Communications - Dickinson College PA

  • Board members:
Derek DuBose, Senior Assistant Director, The Ohio State University
Elise Rodriguez, Co-Director of College Counseling, The Dalton School (NY)
Ffiona Rees, UCLA, Senior Associate Director, Evaluation & International Admission
Additionally, the following appointments were made:
  • Sherri Geller, co-director of college counseling at Gann Academy (MA), will join for one year as a  board director and coordinator of the NACAC Affiliate Presidents Council.
  • Jacques Steinberg, senior vice president for higher education and communications at Say Yes to Education (NY), was appointed for a three-year term by NACAC’s Board of Directors to serve on the board.
The Assembly of delegates is NACAC's governing body, made up of delegates who are elected by the voting NACAC members of the state and regional affiliates. Iowa ACAC's delegates are: Past President & Chief Delegate Erin Gabriel (Dowling Catholic High School), President Terri Crumley (Mount Mercy University), Julie Staker (Coe College), Chevy Freiburger (Central College), and President-Elect Mark Ash (Kirkwood Community College) is our Alternate Delegate. The Assembly meets at every national conference.
